Overview of SSL

SSL stands for secure socket layer and it was originally developed by Netscape way back in 1994. This was the first commercially available security feature to protect user information over the web. Previously SSL is used to mainly used to secure web browser and also servers, however, today SSL goes beyond to secure all types of data transfer which included credit card transaction, data transfer, logins, blogging sites and recently used for social media sites.

SSL certificate is a special coding file that is used to enables encryption security for any online communications between the web server and user browser to ensure that the exchange of information between the server and browser is completely secured and encrypted. A site or pages without SSL, allows hackers or thieves to steal the information from your web server.

Is HTTPS ?

When a SSL certificate is successfully installed on your server, the application protocol (also known as HTTP) will change to HTTPs, where the ‘S’ stands for ‘secure’.  The browser of the visitor or visitors will show a padlock or green bar that indicated that SSL Certificate is installed to the web server to ensure secure and encrypted transaction between the customer’s browser with the web server and the browser. This padlock and green bar basically built confidence and trust of the customers towards the online owners of the web server.

It Works ?

  • A browser or server attempts to connect to a Website, a.k.a. Web server, secured with SSL. The browser/server requests that the Web server identify itself. The Web server sends the browser/server a copy of its SSL certificate.
  • The browser/server checks to see whether or not it trusts the SSL certificate. If so, it sends a message to the Web server.
  • The Web server sends back a digitally signed acknowledgement to start an SSL encrypted session.
  • Encrypted data is shared between the browser/server and the Web server.

This is important because the information you send on the Internet is passed from computer to computer to get to the destination server. Any computer in between you and the server can see your credit card numbers, usernames and passwords, and other sensitive information if it is not encrypted with an SSL certificate.
